OPENING

The sound of jazz filled the restaurant as members arrived — setting the stage for a warm and engrossing presentation. Skip led the group in prayer and John led the Pledge of Allegiance. Dana is still in Africa, so we were without the week's Medal of Honor quote — though one he might have chosen comes to mind:

"Every man deserves a cause greater than himself."

IN MEMORIAM: WILLIAM RICE BRUMMETT (August 13, 1944 – April 5, 2026)

The meeting opened with members sharing fond and funny memories of Bill Brummett, a beloved friend and longtime colleague who passed away on Easter Sunday. His birthday happened to fall on the very day of this meeting.

Bill was born in Denver and grew up in Pueblo, where he was a three-sport athlete at Centennial High School and later played basketball at Pueblo Community College. He earned a BA from Southern Colorado State College (now CSU Pueblo) and served in the U.S. Army Reserve. He built a career helping grow his father's businesses — Telephone Secretarial Services and Air Page — before joining RMRM Business Environments, where he worked until his death.

An active member of Colorado Springs civic life, Bill belonged to the Colorado Springs Executives Association, the El Paso Club, Pikes Peak Sertoma, and the Garden of the Gods Club, where he enjoyed tennis for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Mary McCullum Brummett — the love of his life. He is survived by his brothers Jim (Nancy) of Colorado Springs and Tom (Rina) of Philadelphia, and by a bunch of nieces and nephews.

Chuck Theobold combines a background in engineering, education, music, and church and community leadership. He describes himself simply as the guy at church who is always setting something up, helping with lights, going to committee meetings, and saying "yes" when asked. Seventeen years ago, when Charles Stetzer came up with the idea for Jazz in the Garden and asked for help, Chuck said "of course." That's how it started.

About Jazz in the Garden

Jazz in the Garden takes place on the lawn in front of Grace and St. Stephen's Church — a congregation with a long history of excellent music and free community programming. The event offers wonderful live jazz and free wine. All you need to bring is something to sit on.

Club Field Trip — Last Concert of the Season

The club is attending the final Jazz in the Garden concert of 2026 together. Members who wish to join will have wine provided by the club.

Because it is the last concert of the season, expect a large crowd — arrive early for better positioning.

The meeting's raffle drawings were donated to support Jazz in the Garden — a small thank-you from the club to a program that has brought Colorado Springs so much joy over the years.
